Nevada State Development Corporation (NSDC) partnered with JP Morgan Chase Bank to assist Las Vegas-based Start Pac, owned by Judith and James Wurth, with an SBA 504 loan, allowing the portable power supply manufacturer to buy a space at 4357 W. Sunset Rd.
The Wurths founded the business in 1999; Judith serves as CEO and James, an engineer by trade, is the designer/inventor of Start Pac’s patented designs aimed at the aviation and locomotive industries.

“The business had grown to the point where we needed additional space,” said Eve Storm, vice president of Start Pac, and daughter of the Wurths. “We looked at renting additional space, but it worked out that buying our own facility was going to be cheaper than renting.”
Not only was buying space going to be more cost efficient for Start Pac, the business was able to triple the size of its facility.
“We’ve seen a benefit to having the larger space on several different levels,” said Storm. “We have more space for our office operations and our office layout is better, making for a more positive work environment. Our warehouse and shop area is more efficient, and we’re fortunate to have a really nice lunch room now. It’s clean and quiet—people feel like they have a place to go to take a real break and get off the shop floor.”
Storm says they’ve seen a benefit for their customers and vendors, too. “We now have a beautiful office space to show off to our customers and vendors, who frequently visit us. It helps instill confidence in the quality of our products.”
Christopher Hunter, business development officer for NSDC, recommends looking into purchasing a space for businesses who are currently renting.
“The market remains at a point where it could be cheaper to buy a building versus continuing to rent,” said Hunter. “For small business owners, it’s worth exploring, because it could be a simple and significant way to invest in your business.”
